Description

This course provides participants with an introduction to theoretical and practical concepts in reservoir simulation technology. Course participants will learn about the fundamentals of reservoir simulation, its main components, and how they are used in the development of a simulation study. The course is divided into four sections:

  1. Overview of reservoir modeling
  2. Reservoir simulation equations
  3. Reservoir simulation strategies
  4. Simulation model QA/QC and model interrogation

Closing remarks will include discussions on the value of reservoir simulation and future trends. During the course, students will execute various simulation cases using the OpenSim simulator via cloud-based computing as well as FocusRE/ResInsight to visualize and analyze simulation outputs.

Jose Villa is a Senior Reservoir Engineer in the US Gulf of Mexico Development Team with Total E&P USA. He focuses on reservoir modeling and simulation and has mainly worked off-shore oil fields in USA, Venezuela, and Africa. He has actively participated in the development and deployment of reservoir simulation technologies during his professional career. He previously worked for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Houston, TX, 4 years) Shell International E&P (Houston, TX, 8 years) and PDVSA Intevep (Venezuela, 10 years), and conducted a number of studies in onshore and offshore fields involving analytical and numerical simulation, history matching, well/field optimization, and integrated asset modeling. In addition to that, he prepared and taught classes on reservoir simulation technology and assisted history matching (AHM) to his colleagues at Shell in different locations. He holds two degrees in PE, a BS from Central University of Venezuela, and a MS from Stanford University. Jose Villa also actively volunteers for the SPE Gulf Coast Section (Reservoir Study Group) and has been committee member and co-chair person in several SPE workshops.
