Description

Working in the oil and gas industry can be rewarding on its own without venturing into places of leadership.  Many people choose to remain technical professionals and are rewarded well.  For these people the satisfaction of increasing their technical competence and subject matter expertise is a sufficient career aspiration.  For others the desire to lead beckons.  These individuals have proven themselves capable in various technical roles within industry functions.  This achievement spurs them into leadership.  For some this is as easy as a promotion into a role as a first line supervisor.  For others this may mean a cross-functional role that integrates their past experience with a new field.

In any case, the element of motivating others to perform and accomplish shared goals is a new task that requires attention.  Some organizations are good at creating frameworks that helps to clarify the pre-requisites and skills for these early leadership roles.  Other organizations are not as clear. Either way, promotion also depends on personal ownership of your career path, and practicing certain principles. If you fall into the category of someone who is interested in preparing to be promotable to leadership, this is an event for you.

After over 25 years in the oil and gas industry, Shivana recently started a new chapter as a coach, focusing on leadership and team development. Originally from the Caribbean, where she started her oil and gas career with EOG Resources, Shivana moved to the USA in 2014. Her extensive experience with Production Sharing Contracts positioned her as a subject matter expert for the companies she worked with and their business partners, including state companies. With the heart of a teacher, Shivana enjoys condensing complex commercial agreements into practical, actionable steps that can be integrated into the business and increase the understanding of the wider teams.

As a person of faith, Shivana credits her successes to a diligent pursuit of developing and stewarding what she is blessed with. However, she does not shy away from sharing her failures because these were her greatest lessons after all. Even though what she does is serious stuff, Shivana knows how to not take herself too seriously and that comes across in her warm spirit and witty humor. She also credits her understanding and affinity for technical operations to being married to an engineer. Shivana and her husband, Mphatso, have two adult sons and a teenage daughter.
