Curtis Cheatham joined Corva in 2017 as Senior Drilling Engineering Advisor where his interests include real-time drilling optimization, automated torque and drag and hydraulics, data analytics and machine learning, and drilling automation.
His career began in 1977 with Shell where he worked in drilling engineering research and deepwater drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1989, he joined Sperry Sun Drilling Services where he helped develop new drilling technology including rotary steerable systems, PWD tools, and downhole vibrations sensors.
Curtis has co-authored 25+ technical papers and is past executive editor of SPE Drilling & Completion Journal. He is a member of SPE Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section and is a past Advisory Board Member and Officer. He has given talks at the SPE Gulf Coast Section Drilling Symposium – in 2017 on real-time stuck pipe prediction and in 2018 on automated torque and drag. In 2016, he was elected SPE Distinguished Member.
He holds B.S. and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University in Houston, Texas.
