Description

Greenhouse gas emissions are an increasing concern for the planet and for the oil & gas industry in particular.  While the world needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we also will rely on fossil fuels for decades to power our economies.  Most greenhouse gas emission related to the oil & gas industry occur at the point of consumption, where the end-user combusts the fuel to produce useful energy.  However, about 20% of the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions occur directly, during the process of production and refining.  These direct greenhouse gas emissions from production/refining exceed the greenhouse gas emissions from other entire industries such as aviation, cement, and steel.  Fortunately, many new technologies are being developed to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane emissions, from oil & gas production.  This presentation will cover new technologies than can quickly and substantially reduce our industry’s direct greenhouse gas emissions.  Widespread implementation of these technologies can help solve the dual challenge of simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting growing energy demand.

Pomerantz is an Energy Transition Technology Advisor at Schlumberger, based in Boston, Massachusetts.  His work focuses on the development and implementation of novel methodologies to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions—particularly fugitive methane emissions—from the upstream/midstream oil and gas industry.  He has 15 years industry experience and a background in chemistry.  He graduated from Stanford University with a PhD in chemistry and has co-authored 100 peer-reviewed publications and 25 granted US patents.
