The SPE Members in Transition Seminar Series is designed to include a selection of topics of interest to SPE members who are transitioning in between jobs during the current industry downturn or who are looking for new career opportunities.  The agenda for the fortieth seminar in the series will include "CO2 Sequestration - Enhanced Oil Recovery - CO2/EOR "Huff-n-Puff" in the 21st Century",Agility," "Workflow for Techno-economic and Life Cycle Assessment of the CO2-based Technologies " and a “Discussion of Resources for SPE Members”.

Speaker #1 Bio:  David Merchant is a Reservoir Engineer with 43 years of oil and gas experience. He started his career with Amoco in 1976, worked Gulf of Mexico, Amoco’s Research Center, Africa and Middle East Region, and Permian Basin. After Amoco, he spent three years at Pennzoil. He began his Consulting career in 1998 with Shell CO2 Company. Since then, he has consulted for Major Oil Companies (Marathon, Oxy, and BP) and Independent companies (Denbury, Hilcorp, etc.). His CCS experience started 19 years ago while consulting for Los Alamos in the formation of the Regional Partnerships. His CO2 Sequestration experience includes: Basin Study Analysis, Scoping Model Predictions, Reservoir Modeling, and Reservoir Management.  His current focus is to partner with AIChE and Shale Oil operators in the Permian Basin to “Put out the Flare” from Unconventional Shale Oil Wells while achieving 2X or even 3X Primary Oil Recovery.

Speaker #1 Abstract: CO2 Sequestration - Enhanced Oil Recovery - CO2/EOR "Huff-n-Puff" in the 21st Century

In July 2019, David published CMTC-554157 – “CO2 Sequestration - Enhanced Oil Recovery - CO2/EOR "Huff-n-Puff" in the 21st Century”. The paper targets the NEXT EVOLUTION in the SHALE OIL REVOLUTION. With the addition of CO2/EOR “Huff-n-Puff” tertiary oil operations, future oil recovery could be 2X to 3X times greater than today’s Primary Oil Recovery. The paper centers on The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Flare gas) in Shale Oil Recovery and a plan that could “Put out the Flare” while recovering 2X to 3X times today’s Shale Oil Recovery. The talk presents Scoping Model Predictions (50x40 mile area) of how much CO2 can be sequestered, and a CO2 Capture Plant option which provides the best alternative to “Put the Flare out”.  The Scoping Model Prediction estimates 4.5 Tcf of CO2 could be sequestered. The amount of CO2 sequestered is significant, while eliminating the flare in the Permian basin.  The question becomes “At what point will Unconventional Shale Oil CO2/EOR “Huff-n-Puff” make its mark in the 21st Century?”

In today’s fast changing world, being agile is getting more and more important.  Being agile to continue stay competent and outperform, being agile emotionally for the wellbeing of self and others around us.  Sincia will discuss the importance of technical skills vs soft skills in different stages of one’s career.  Her speech will expand on the following soft skills that she finds are common opportunities to be enhanced by many.

  • How well do you know yourself? Self-awareness is the core of emotional intelligence.  We all have blind spots, value and beliefs that are guiding, helping or limiting ourselves consciously or unconsciously.

  • Technics to manage through change. How to turn anxieties and fears into opportunities.

  • Convincing others without authority

Speaker #3 Abstract: Workflow for Techno-economic and Life Cycle Assessment of the CO2-based Technologies

One of the key factors for the success of the science-based startups is having a defined scope, insight and strategy to turn the ideas into the successful technologies. Therefore, the feasibility studies play the decision-making role in the startups’ technology development as it defines the cost of the product as well as the environmental factors (e.g. CO2 utilization rate). At Cemvita Factory Inc., the feasibility study by means of techno-economic and life cycle assessment (TEA and LCA) tools is one of the primary and major steps in development of the innovative solutions for the environmental challenges.  This presentation includes the workflow in Cemvita Factory Inc. for techno-economic and life cycle assessment of technologies that based on the utilization of CO2 and its conversion to value-added chemicals/biochemical.
