Description

Since the advent of multi-staged fracture stimulation treatments in horizontal wellbores, the challenge of placing proppant in hydraulic fractures while leaving the wellbore free of proppant material for deployment of mechanical isolation equipment such as frac balls and composite plugs has necessitated the practice of over-displacing each propped treatment with a clean flush fluid. Despite concerns with this impacting the near-wellbore proppant pack, satisfactory well production results in a variety of formations have allowed the practice to live on. However, many questions remain about this practice, including how much are we limiting productivity, how is cluster efficient affected, and how much complexity and unpredictability is being built into an already complicated system? This presentation will discuss turbulent pipe flow theory for ensuring the total removal of proppant grains at lower injection rates, provide a summary of a field case study of over 200 stages successfully pumped with a minimized overflush strategy, and show a statistical analysis comparing production results from these wells to other wells in their field.

Wadhah Al-Tailji is a Technical Manager at StrataGen, where he advises clients on stimulation practices and designs through fracture and reservoir modeling, data analytics, stimulation treatment supervision, and production evaluation in unconventional plays such as the Eagle Ford Shale. Prior to joining StrataGen in 2010, Wadhah worked for a major pressure pumping service company for four years in the East Texas Basin. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in petroleum engineering from New Mexico Tech, and has authored three SPE papers on the topics of stimulation practices in the Eagle Ford Shale.
