Stephanie Weiss is a former newspaper reporter and science journalist. Her first newswriting award was a Sports Feature award for a Houston Chronicle article about the physics of baseball, she later wrote about photonics technology for Encyclopedia Britannica. In 7 years with BJ Services and now Baker Hughes, she has authored one SPE paper, ghost-written or reviewed more than 100, and written dozens of articles of industry trade journals. She was the founding president of the Baker Hughes Pressure Talkers Toastmasters club, where she continues to encourage colleagues to improve their communication and leadership skills.

Full Description

Oil & gas scientists and engineers have an enormous communication problem. We are smart people, developing innovative technologies and often forced to explain them to supervisors and executives from outside of our focused area of expertise. Or maybe we are field engineers, trying to work safely and efficiently in a world where every action is scrutinized to minute details by a noisy but narrow band of people who are predisposed to mistrust everything we do or say. What’s a smart engineer to do? Learn how to communicate effectively:  Understand your audience, dump the Powerpoint, and tell the “story” of your work.

This presentation will explain why communication skills are particularly critical for young engineers; share some best practices for developing and improving communication skills; and encourage participants to evangelize about oil & gas technology whenever they have an opportunity.

Please PAY when you register online for this event  to mimimize long walk-in registration lines during the event.
