The combination of Under Balanced and Horizontal Drilling (ubhd®) has created the ultimate completion technique for nearly all reservoirs. It is especially applicable in low quality reservoirs such as tight gas sands where the permeability is due to micro fracturing. New technology will be needed to simplify the process to make it as routine as a frac job. SunStone is currently developing a new “worm proof” deployment valve to eliminate snubbing, artificial lift while drilling to lower the hydrostatic pressure without using compression equipment, semi-smart drill pipe that will orient downhole tools without using a gyro, a short radius rotary steerable air hammer and a simple technique to exit casing. This technology will help to ensure the proper execution of this completion technique that has proven to deliver significantly higher productivity and recovery of hydrocarbons. This will lead to the re-drilling of many old oil and gas fields in the U.S. and around the world.
