Description

This 1-day course provides an introduction to the latest evaluation, drilling, and completion techniques for unconventional gas reservoirs. Background information is also presented on fundamental geologic and engineering concepts, the differences between conventional and unconventional reservoirs, key terminology, the development history of the four primary sources of unconventional gas, and environmental issues. Topics include:

  • Unconventional gas overview
  • Essential geologic properties
  • Natural gas fundamentals
  • Lessons from CBM
  • Lessons from tight gas
  • Shale gas development
  • Petroleum systems
  • Drilling options
  • Completion options
  • Hydraulic fracturing basics
  • Horizontal drilling basics
  • Determining reserves
  • Forecasting production
  • Global activities
  • Environmental issues

Why You Should Attend

Gain insights on how gas volumes and gas production rates are determined and factors controlling the value of unconventional gas prospects. This course includes an understanding of the different drilling and completion options and discussions on the current environmental challenges and apparent solutions.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for those having some familiarity with the oil and gas industry but with little to no exposure to unconventional reservoir evaluation or development. The target audience includes engineers, geologists, technicians, sales representatives, investors, managers, government officials, planners, land specialists, and technical support staff.

Unconventional Gas Manager
Source Rock Engineering

Steve Hennings is the unconventional gas manager for Source Rock Engineering in Littleton, Colorado. He has over 30 years of field and reservoir experience in a large number of basins, covering every phase of development. His focus for the past decade has been on coal gas, coal mine methane and shale gas development. He has been involved in technical evaluations of development and exploration prospects in eight different countries including China, Australia, Canada, India, and the United States.

In 2008, Hennings was awarded the prestigious annual Stefanko Award from the Society of Mining Engineers for his technical contributions. Hennings is a registered professional engineer. He holds a BS in petroleum engineering and an MS in finance.
