Description

For the past several years Marathon Oil, in collaboration with several service companies, has been funding development and field trials of RFID technology to actuate downhole drilling and completion tools.    This overview will discuss the various tools ( circ subs, under-reamers, disconnects, cementing valves, etc) which have or are being developed and field trialed.  Some tools are now commercially being used in the field  (Alaska, Mexico, Kazakhstan, Poland ) and those results / reasons the operators chose to use the technology will also be described.       An interesting North Sea  drilling / completion  RFID interventionless completion will also be described in some detail.  It is anticipated a large number of these RFID tools will enter the market within the next year, in addition to the jobs already either completed or underway.

Phil Snider is a Sr. Technical Consultant for Marathon Oil in Houston, where he assists the company with its drilling and completion efforts.   He is a 1979 graduate of the University of Wyoming (B.S. PE)  and has worked in various locations in  Drilling, Completion, and Reservoir engineering assignments since then.   Like many others, he holds a significant number of patents on perforating, propellant, and completion tools  and now tries to avoid writing any technical papers or publications.
