Many professional and technical societies have ethical guidelines for their members. The Continuing Education Program for Professional Engineers in Texas requires an hour of Ethics training annually for license renewal.   Corporations often have codes of business conduct and ethics. How do engineers learn to make better decisions when they are faced with ethical dilemmas?

Susan Howes is Horizons Program Manager, in the Organizational Capability group, at Chevron. Howes is formerly Learning and Organizational Development Manager at Anadarko. Her 27-year career includes various engineering assignments in Denver and Houston, including responsibilities in recruiting and career development for engineers, managing acquisition and divestment projects, economic evaluation, reservoir studies and reservoir simulation of conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Howes has a BS in petroleum engineering from The University of Texas.   She is a registered professional engineer in Texas.

She recently served on the SPE International Board, representing the Gulf Coast Region, and she has just joined the SPE Talent Council for a three-year term.    Howes is a past Chair of the SPE Gulf Coast Section, and was named in 2003 as a Distinguished Member of SPE. She received the 1997 SPE Young Member Outstanding Service Award, and the 2005 SPE Distinguished Service Award.  Susan is Chevron Women’s Network Vice President.
