Beginning with the first Barnett Shale vertical well drilled in 1981 and continuing through the simultaneous fracing of multiple offsetting horizontal Barnett wells beginning in 2004, the Barnett Shale in North Texas has been the proving ground for much new technology development designed to unlock the reserves trapped in micro-darcy shale plays.
The technological advancements originating in the Barnett Shale have now begun to be employed in other micro-darcy shale plays, thus opening up more and more unconventional gas development. These techniques have now found utility in the Fayetteville, Woodford, Marcellus, Bossier, and Haynesville shales, to name a few. This presentation will trace the evolution of the Barnett Shale play and the completion techniques that it has spawned. It will also chronicle the geographic expansion of the Barnett play to the southwest of its original “core area”. It will then examine a number of the newer shale plays in the Arkoma, Appalachian, and Alabama shale basins, compare and contrast their basic reservoir properties, and describe the application of many of the Barnett-developed technologies in exploiting these plays.
