The popular format of a Business & Social Networking hour, with complimentary Hors D’ Oeuvres and a cash bar, followed by an hour-long program, will begin at 5:30 pm in the Mezzanine. Please enjoy this evening with BDSG colleagues!

         Industry Viewpoints:
    Business Development
in a $100 / Barrel world

The 90’s were a decade of consolidation, with a steady spin-off of non-core fields by the Majors and Super-Majors. In the process, substantial assets were cashed in to fund mega-projects in Deepwater and International venues worldwide. Buyers, meanwhile, re-developed these older fields where technology and attention to costs restored profitability. With the resurgence of product prices (up almost 50% since 1/1/07!), both the super-Major and the regional independent have balance sheets that are robust beyond precedent. What are the new frontiers, and what are the trends we might expect in the next 1 to 5 to 10 years in the era of $100 oil prices? Will the Majors and large Independents, confronted with questions of access and tougher fiscal terms be willing to sell viable producing fields? Or will the hunger for reserves, and ready internal funding create a new round of consolidation, and acquisitions of reserves on an “as available” basis? Will the focus be on significant undeveloped assets that now promise high returns at today’s prices? Are resource plays, unconventional gas and heavy oil deposits the “wave of the future”? What “new frontiers” may evolve? How is the issue of technical manpower affecting the strategy of industry?
