EDUCATION:

  • Dulles High School - 1991
  • University of Texas at Austin, BS in Petroleum Engineering
  • MS Petroleum Engineering

My favorite college memory is Dr. Dan Hill’s production engineering class. I was recruited by Chevron, and started in Bakersfield as a Petroleum Engineer. I later transferred to Midland, then Western Venezuela (Maracaibo). I was Subsurface Manager for WA Oil asset in Perth. I recently accepted a position allowing my return to Venezuela as Subsurface Manager for Hamaca Field (Eastern Venezuela). I have served in several SPE leadership roles in the various sections where I’ve worked:

  • SPE Permian Basin Section: Membership Director, 2004-05, The Pipeline Newsletter Editor, 2003-04.
  • SPE San Joaquin Valley Section: Section Service Award for Outstanding Service ’00-’02, Newsletter Editor 2002, Activities Director 2001-02, National Engineers Week Director 2000

The SPE-GCS scholarship provided the financial backing that allowed me to leave home and study what I wanted. I did not have financial support from my parents. Without this scholarship, I would not have become a PE and would not have been able to achieve my potential. I would have had a very different life. My advice to students is to study as hard as you can, university is a competition to get the best jobs. I joined a major integrated oil company straight out of college and I feel it is one of the best decisions I made. By being flexible in my career I have been allowed the opportunity to live in different countries, meet some great people, and always have interesting/challenging jobs. Contact me at laura@chevron.com
