EDUCATION:

  • Woodway High School (Edmonds, Washington) - 1989
  • Texas A&M University - College Station, BS in Petroleum Engineering

My favorite college memories were the Aggie Traditions and great small knit group in the PETE department; many of us stayed fairly close in work after school as well.  I've worked for small independents, supermajors, and the largest service company in oil and gas.  I have a different view than most on the business having worked both sides.  I hold several patents, and have enjoyed the people, the projects, and the places I've worked over the years.  It's been a very fulfilling career, although times like these are difficult.    The money from the SPE-GCS scholarship helped tremendously as a student with limited resources, it went a long way towards cost of my education. My advice to current students is that I am consistently warning young people looking at our industry to be aware of the volatility, prepare for it, and be prepared to grind through tough times.  I've always had the view that it isn't a matter of "if", but "when" the next downturn comes.
