Chevron Workshop with Professor Sam Savage

On September 20th, Chevron will be hosting Professor Sam Savage’s workshop on dealing with uncertainty and avoiding the “Flaw of Averages.”  The workshop will include analysis of real world problems and the opportunity for hands-on computer exercises using SIPmath.  A SIP, or Stochastic Information Packet, is a way of representing an uncertainty as a data array comprised of thousands of possible outcomes.  A SIP makes the abstract concept of a probability distribution actionable, additive, and auditable.  This provides a number of benefits and SIP capability is starting to appear in software like Lumina Systems Analytica and the Frontline Systems Solver platform.  SIPmath may be used with native Excel, with or without free Excel plugins.  More information is available here

Chevron is one of several corporate sponsors of, which is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization dedicated to improving communication of uncertainty.  Their Board of Directors includes Doug Hubbard, author of How to Measure Anything, and Nobel laureate Harry Markowitz.  Sam Savage is their Executive Director and is quite a speaker.  I can attest he always packed the room when he spoke at the INFORMS Analytics Conferences. recently was added to the Gartner Hype Cycle for Data Science.

Chevron has donated pro bono use of facilities; the event is a event.  Fees all go to to support their work. The workshop will be held at the Chevron office at 1400 Smith Street, Houston.  Workshop space is limited, so I encourage you to consider registering yourself or your employees quickly.
