The Seizure of Yukos and What It Means About the Rule of Law in Russia

The sale of the main production unit of the Russian oil company YUKOS in 2004 marked a climax in the dispute between the company and the Russian government. It shook investor confidence in Russia and called into question the rule of law and the security of private property. The following year, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, CEO of YUKOS, and his associate Platon Lebedev were convicted of fraud and tax evasion and sentenced to 9-years in a minimum-security prison colony.

What does the future hold for the Russian Oil industry? Many experts believe that recent developments point to Putin's desire to assert state control over the industry in Russia and its neighbors.
