Northside - Deepwater Drilling Pore Pressure and Fracture Gradient Prediction and Detection

How does one drill a well in deepwater and design a casing string in the pre-planning drilling stage? Pore pressure and fracture gradient estimation prior to drilling is necessary for drilling Deepwater wells. When the pore pressure gradient and fracture gradient margin narrows, the well may be lost or non-productive time may occur due to combating kicks and/or mud losses.  This occurs in many instances.

This presentation will focus on the data requirements for pre-drill pore pressure and fracture gradient calculation methods from offset well data. This presentation will discuss various stages in the estimation of pore pressure and fracture gradient in pre-drill stages as well as real-time. The use of offset well logs to produce pore pressure and fracture pressure will be discussed.  How these factors aid in creating a drilling mud weight window and help in casing seat design will also be presented in detail.
