Current and projected rates of CO₂ emissions may lead to changes in global climate. While improved energy efficiency and renewable energy will play growing roles in this century, fossil fuels will provide the bulk of the energy resources for decades to come.

CO₂ sequestration, the capture and storage of CO₂ emissions in geological formations, offers a promising option for reducing CO₂ emissions to the atmosphere. Key issues associated with CO₂ sequestration include the cost of CO₂ capture-transportation and assurance of adequate geological storage capacity and containment “permanence.” Specifically, there is a continuing need to improve storage venue selection and characterization, operating parameters, monitoring and verification technology selection, and quantitative risk assessment. The technical basis for appropriate regulation and cultivation of positive public opinion will be essential to enabling viable, large-scale CO₂ storage operations.

Calling on decades of experience in gas processing, transportation, and injection, the oil and gas industry is uniquely qualified to advance CO₂ sequestration technology and best practices. The E&P industry possesses the critical geoscience and engineering skills needed for the technical and economic success of storage projects.

Objectives
This workshop examines and moves forward on critical issues associated with CO₂ capture and geologic storage by engaging representatives of US and international industry (oil and gas, manufacturing and utilities), research and development (private firms, universities, and national labs), government (technical and regulatory), and environmental nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). It will include detailed, open discussions. Attendees will consider practical approaches for resolving the critical issues involved in large-scale sequestration.
