Westside Webinar: It's Good to Talk: Downhole Communications in Well Operations - SPE Distinguished Lecturer

The oil industry is notoriously conservative when it comes to adopting new technology. One of the positives of the post $100+ BBL world is that innovation has been stimulated by a requirement to survive. Remotely-activated downhole tools and real time data have existed in drilling and well-test environments, but their adoption into the completions world has been slow. Now their adoption is starting to be driven by key operators who see their value to operations and production. This presentation will explain the function and performance of these technologies and the roles that they can fulfill. A number of different case studies from across different areas of the industry will be presented to demonstrate how their adoption can bring new real time data to traditional operations and allow that data to be acted on to greatly cut the cost and risk of operations. Also how the use of remotely activated tools facilitates the devolvement of entirely new methods of well construction, installation, start-up and production possibilities.
