Webinar: Computational Modelling of Fluidized Bed Process and Its Applications

Fluidized bed process ranges from simple applications such as cooling, drying, pneumatic transport of powders and slurry, etc., to more complex reactors including oil refining (FCC), biomass conversion (catalytic pyrolysis), combustion and gasification of coal and biomass, etc. More recently, applications in CO2 removal, Methane to chemicals, and hydraulic fracturing also caught on with fluidization process. Its ability to quickly remove heat and enhance contacts between solids and fluids are the major advantages. However, issues of erosion and reliability in upscaling present many challenges. CFD modelling has been routinely used to understand the underlying phenomenon of fluidization and provide cost-effective and less conservative solutions. To model the fluid and solid processes, range of CFD models have been developed, including the Eulerian granular model, discrete element method (DEM), multiphase particle in cell (MPPIC), etc. Many works have been done to enhance the modeling accuracy, including sub-grid scale models, novel averaging methods, better drag laws, and innovative approaches to fluid-solid interactions. Fundamentally it is the resolution requirements and its highly unstable nature that hinders the progress of the CFD modeling and experimental correlations.

This webinar aims bring together experts in academia and industry to brainstorm and discuss and help us better understand the current state of the art approach to this important process and its applications. This workshop will include short talks by key practitioners covering various aspects of computational modelling of fluidized bed process, followed by a group discussion.
