Digital Transformation: From Earth’s Orbit to Downhole: Applying Lessons Learned from Human Spaceflight to Growing an Innovative Digital Culture

The Digital Transformation Study Group (DTSG) brings a novel perspective to the challenges of growing an innovative digital culture. Human spaceflight, specifically the multi-national, orbital construction project that is the International Space Station (ISS), shares operating challenges with upstream. The spaceflight environment is 250 miles above Earth’s surface and quite inhospitable to us humans. Once safely in orbit, the crew needs protections from temperature and pressure extremes, significant capital investment for living and working quarters outfitted for emergency scenarios and increasing autonomy from Mission Control back on Earth. Likewise, drilling, completions, and workover crews need similar protections, capital investment, and increasing levels of autonomy. What, then, are the lessons from ISS that apply to upstream operators?
