CFD Webinar: Computational Modelling of Flow Induced Vibrations (FIV) – Industry Practices

Vibrations of any kind in the Oil and Gas Industry can be a serious safety challenge for operators especially while dealing with high-pressure equipment or piping containing hydrocarbons. They may result in fatigue induced failures, structural integrity issues, noise concerns, and general human or operator discomfort. These vibrations are often caused by the internal flow of fluids, more commonly known as Flow-Induced Vibrations (FIV). FIV may be acoustically induced (pulsations) in gas systems, high-frequency excitations in relief systems or generally due to fluid movement, especially multiphase flow in tortuous piping or equipment.

Traditionally, FIV related issues are designed out by using conservative screening approaches at the facility design stage. However, more advanced techniques using a combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) have gained significant traction over the last decade, as they can help understand the underlying phenomenon and provide cost-effective and less conservative solutions. In an operational stage, the use of these tools is beneficial for troubleshooting existing issues, debottlenecking for a future capacity increase of facilities by providing reliable and robust mitigations, and root cause analysis upon physical failures.

This webinar will be a joint session of SPE-GCS CFD Study Group and MFIV Special Interest Group and it aims to bring together a group of experts from the industry and academia to discuss the use and application of CFD in this specific domain. This workshop will include short talks by key practitioners covering various aspects of computational modelling for FIV followed by a group discussion.
