HSE&S Webinar: Effects of hazard/safety statement design in procedures.

In this presentation, participants will learn about how the designs of hazard statements might impact whether workers attend to them. In other words, do we observe significant differences in attention to hazard statements based on design characteristics like whether there is a hazard icon, yellow highlighting, numbering, and borders? Furthermore, do differences in attention lead to different compliance rates? We will present results from two different studies. We will first briefly present results of a study indicating that different hazard statement elements produce different compliance rates. The second study utilized eye-tracking technology to determine whether participants are attending to hazard statements differently based on two different exemplar designs that have yielded the largest gap in hazard statement compliance in our past work.

Target audience: This seminar will be highly beneficial to those who manage procedural systems in high-risk industries as well as those who write and maintain operating procedures, especially those who design hazard (AKA safety) statements. In addition, this webinar will help human factors and safety practitioners expand their knowledge regarding human factors.
