Westside - Near-Wellbore Consolidation and Fracturing of Unconsolidated Formations – Case Histories

Successful sand control completions are effective at stopping the production of formation sand and fines while allowing more economic production rates. Field case histories to be presented will demonstrate that near-wellbore consolidation combined with hydraulic fracturing allows wells to handle higher drawdowns and to maintain production at desirable flow rates. The method to be presented combines near-wellbore consolidation and tip-screenout fracturing performed sequentially as part of a screenless completion design for unconsolidated formations. The consolidation treatment allows the near-wellbore zone to withstand the effects of frequent stress cycling as the well undergoes production and shut-ins. With resulting significant reductions in produced formation sand, remedial treatments have been required much less frequently as compared to wells without the consolidation treatments. These techniques provide an attractive alternative to conventional sand control completions for lower quality reservoirs as well as an effective through-tubing completion alternative.
