General Meeting: Leveraging Automation in Drilling to Optimize the Well Construction Process
ABSTRACT of Presentation
The Well Construction (Drilling, Completions, etc.) process has traditionally been extremely “manual” - personnel are required in the same area as moving equipment. Drillers are expected to control all of their equipment and set Drilling parameters manually. And the use of predictive algorithms to mitigate issues has been limited.
This presentation discusses technologies that ExxonMobil and Suppliers have been working to develop to enhance the well construction process, including on-bottom drilling, automated pipe handling, and others. The presentation will provide some early lessons learned as well as a view into the future as to where the industry needs to progress to continue to enhance safety and efficiency.
Also to be discussed are overall industry barriers and limitations to scaling these technologies across a broad spectrum of operations.
