S&E - Understanding LNG Safety
The demand for natural gas in the United States has outpaced domestic supplies and projections for the next decade are a widening of the gap between demand and domestic supply. As a result, projects have been started to increase natural gas imports using liquefied natural gas (LNG). While the existing natural gas distribution infrastructure will be used to deliver the imported fuel, new facilities are needed to receive, store, and regasify LNG. LNG safety for accidental and intentional release scenarios must be addressed for permitting, operations, and other reasons. The presentation will discuss the properties of LNG, current safety issues, fire and explosion characteristics, hazards predictions, and proposed areas of new or renewed research.
