Permian Basin - Reservoir Management Planning & Implementation: A Case History in the McElroy Field (Crane/Upton County, TX)

The McElroy Field is one of the larger oil fields in the Permian Basin.  It is located on the eastern edge of the Central Basin Platform and produces from the Grayburg formation at a depth of 2900’.  ChevronTexaco operates the field which has been under waterflood since the early 1960’s.

Upon the Chevron-Texaco merger in 2002, a team was assembled to improve the performance of the waterflood.  For effective evaluation, the team divided the field into three areas based on the geology and the associated reservoir performance characteristics.  Injection survey maps, integration of geologic & engineering data, zone-specific drilling and value engineering sessions with field operations personnel were some of the many tools used to improve field management and profitability.  The result of this work was an increase in production for a field that was on an 8% annual decline.
