Westside: Non-destructive Qualitative and Quantitative Core Assessment Using Computed Tomography

Rapid, non-destructive screening using high-definition imaging techniques now enables superior visualization and detailed quantitative core assessment.  X-ray scanners, popularly known as Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, are used for such qualitative and quantitative descriptions of cores. Linking these data with a competent core database enables a robust empirical quantification of porosity and mechanical properties down to a millimeter-scale.

A multi-dimensional cluster analysis has been developed which can be used to categorize the cored intervals in “petrophysical-properties” facies.  A mechanical facies description enables an operator to easily identify areas for geo-mechanical testing and ultimately completion targeting.  These descriptions and analyses are obtained before cores are “plugged”, thus avoiding any compromised fluid saturations.  This early-time interpretation of rock properties enables geoscientists and engineers to quickly characterize the reservoir in a detailed and accurate manner.
