Well Integrity - A Risk Management Perspective
Traditionally well construction typically follows a sequential series of steps. The
business development group identifies a field which is of interest and the potential is
examined with the geologists and geophysics. Once a decision to proceed is made, the
project is passed to the Drilling Group to plan the well(s) and, in turn, they will pass it to
Completions, then production and finally abandonment.
Often there is no clear process of communication, or establishing of common goals,
between various departments to ensure that not only the full development of the
reservoir is achieved, but also that the integrity of well’s design and construction meets
the goal of the intended lifecycle.
An integrated approach to well construction ensures a clear set of objectives is
established identifying the lifecycle uncertainties and risks. From a drilling perspective,
integrated well construction seeks to; reduce time and cost; mitigate risk; and increase
efficiency.
This presentation will discuss what types of risks need to be identified and managed in
order to construct a well that will meet its lifecycle requirements and those of the various
stakeholders.
