Update on NIOSH Industrial Hygiene Research in Upstream Oil and Gas Exploration and Production
NIOSH’s National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) is a partnership program to stimulate innovative research and improved workplace practices. Specifically, the Agenda for Oil and Gas Extraction is intended to identify the knowledge and actions most urgently needed to promote safety and health in the oil and gas extraction industry. One of the research agenda’s objectives is to reduce exposures to hazards and their health effects in workers. To achieve this objective, NIOSH industrial hygienists conduct industrial hygiene evaluations in cooperation with industry partners to identify potentially hazardous occupational exposures at oil and gas exploration and production worksites. Past evaluations have identified hazardous exposures to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) during hydraulic fracturing and to hydrocarbon gases and vapors during manual tank gauging operations. This presentation will provide an update on recent NIOSH industrial hygiene research looking at well drilling, fluid transfer operations, and RCS controls.
