A Walk-through Geologic Time with Emphasis on the Formation of Shale Basins
ABSTRACT of Presentation
Tectonic movement created the shale basins of the North American and is often associated with dynamic and cataclysmic events. This presentation is a travelogue through geologic time beginning in the Cambrian period, addressing continental plate positions, basin formation, and clastic depositional sources. Along the way, a sense for the formation or extinction of fauna and flora that occurred during the various geologic time periods will be highlighted and how they contributed to the creation of hydrocarbons in these shale basins.
This presentation will provide an understanding of how and where the oil rich shale basins in North American were formed and their impact on present day oil and gas production.
