General Meeting: The Future of Reservoir Simulation
ABSTRACT of Presentation
Reservoir Simulation has evolved over a period of some 70 or so years to become a routinely used tool for understanding, predicting and optimizing reservoir performance. Alternative technologies like Decline Curve Analysis, Rate Transient Analysis, and Data Analytics are sometimes touted as offering similar results to reservoir simulation. Yet most engineers still believe that understanding and optimizing reservoir and well performance requires a physics-based modelling solution that can account for the multitude of real-work phenomena that influence reservoir behavior.
This presentation will focus on several recent developments in reservoir simulation that make the use of this technology more as a result in speedups in the actual simulation process itself and in the automation and control of multiple simultaneous runs to achieve history-matching and optimization objectives more quickly. Examples will be presented of the application of reservoir simulation to onshore unconventional plays and to offshore deepwater plays.
