Fracture-Driven Communication (Frac Hits): Causes, Prevention and Remediation Possibilities

Fracture-driven well-to-well communication (FDC) is not new, having first been seen between fractured vertical wells in the 1950’s; however; with the increasing use of horizontal wells with closely spaced transverse hydraulic fractures in naturally fractured formations such as shale, the incidence of FDC is increasing.  This presentation summarizes investigative work carried out by Apache in the past two years, looking at significant causes, workable methods of decreasing the frequency and magnitude of the interference, and evaluation of ways to restore production.
