Agenda

Session I - Using Probabilistic Aggregation to Validate Analog Production Type Curves

Mark McLane (Rose & Associates)

Session II - Scaling for type well construction using a 200-well sample from the Barnett Shale

Dr. John Lee, Texas A&M University

Session III -The Uncertainty of EUR Probability Distributions

Randy Freeborn, 3-esi Enersight

When we create a probability distribution of EUR from wells that we have drilled, that distribution is for a random sample of the true population. If the sample is small, not uniform or biased in other respects, it will not represent the true population. This portion of the training will describe current research on how we might estimate the range of true population distribution, and hence quantify the uncertainty that exists in the best fit of the sample data. Depending on sample size, the revised P10 / P50 / P90 EURs are likely to be substantially different from the fit.
Then we will explore the implication this information will have on the construction of type wells and the estimated outcome of future drilling.

About Our Speakers

Dr. John Lee, Research Fellow

John Lee is one of North America’s premier petroleum reservoir engineering experts specializing in oil and gas reserves, pressure and rate transient analysis, and unconventional oil and gas. He served as an Academic Engineering Fellow with the SEC and was a principal architect of the modernized SEC rules for reporting oil and gas reserves. He’s the author of four textbooks published by the SPE. He is currently a Professor of Petroleum Engineering in the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University, past holder of the Cullen Distinguished University Chair at The University of Houston, and Research Fellow with Energy Navigator.

Randy Freeborn, P. Eng – Chief Research Engineer

Randy Freeborn is a subject matter expert in the field of empirical forecasting, type wells and related technology. Currently, he is Chief Research Engineer at Energy Navigator where he is responsible for identifying and inventing engineering technology for inclusion in the company’s reserve management software. He has been a professional engineer for 44 years and is a member of SPEE and SPE. Freeborn has prepared numerous technical papers for presentation at conferences, workshops and industry meetings. He has given guest lectures at the University of Houston and Texas A&M, and has been called as an expert witness.

Mark McLane, Partner – Rose  & Associates

Mark A. McLane is a Partner in the international consulting firm of Rose & Associates, LLP. He has a diverse technical and business background spanning more than 25 years in the petroleum industry. He joined Rose & Associates in January 2000 after three years with Pioneer Natural Resources and 17 Years with Exxon Company, U.S.A. He has co-authored several technical papers, served on the Professional Ethics/Registration Panel at the 2003 SPE ATCE in Denver, Colorado, and was a Distinguished Lecturer of the Society of Petroleum Engineers on the topic of “Reserve Overbooking – An Issue of Professional Ethics” in 2004 and 2005. He has taught courses for the SPE, AAPG, EAGE, and the Houston Geological Society. He holds a BSc with Honors in Petroleum Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.
