Leading Change in the Mexican Private Energy Sector: Zama-1 Well Update

In 1938 Mexico nationalized all petroleum reserves, facilities, and foreign oil companies in Mexico. 2015 proved a game-changing year as Talos Energy won two blocks in Round 1.1 and subsequently drilled the historic Zama-1 discovery well. Preliminary analysis shows initial gross original oil in place at 1.4 to 2.0 billion barrels, a significant discovery which opens up an entire new play in the Sureste basin. Talos Energy has been a key player in opening up a new age in the Mexican energy market as they spearheaded the first shallow water exploration with the private sector in the last 80 years.

The Zama well discovery represents some critical objectives in Energy reformation: new capital, new players and the spirit of innovation. Talos Energy is creating a true tri-lateral win as the Zama well provides growth for the local Mexican job market, income for Mexico as well as in providing unique and profitable opportunities for the private sector.

We last heard from Loren Long, Managing Director of Talos Energy, in 2016 when he visited with members of SPE on this ground-breaking award and his forward-looking plans. It’s now time to check in with Loren and hear how the Zama discovery was made.

Loren Long has been with Talos since August of 2014, but previously worked with the Talos management team at Phoenix Exploration from 2006 to 2011.  On September 19, 2016, Loren gave a presentation for the International Study Group on E & P in Mexico: the First International Operator’s Perspective.  The November 30, 2017 presentation will pertain to the Zama-1 find, with an update on E & P in Mexico.

Don’t miss the opportunity to gain insights on the Zama Project.
