Tech Transfer: Archimedes to Outer Space, Remote sensing in Oil and Gas Adventures

You are a walking [or driving] remote sensing device, both in your biology and somewhere about your body with a cell phone. While your bio tells you if you are hot or cold, that device can measure how hot or cold you really are and tell everyone else on this planet - anywhere, most who do not even want to know about your day. You may even get ads on your phone for a cool drink or a warm coat while your phone reveals your x,y,z to a host of data gathers. Why not take these now simple information concepts and provide sensing data with interpretations and proposed solutions to well know problems in our field? RPSEA has been working on that with public money and industry participation for over 12 years.

Speaker: William (Bill) Head, Sr. Manager, RPSEA

What is RPSEA?

RPSEA is a consortium of industry, academia and national lab members, chartered as a 501(c)3 for the purpose of public-private cooperative research. There are over 100 member organizations supporting the RPSEA idea. RPSEA manages a large research program for the U.S. DOE, under guidance from NETL. The program was part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, under Section 999, Subtitle J, rescinded in 2014.

Ultra-Deepwater (UDW) Mission: 215 companies participated in the UDW Program, along with 25 Universities, and 3 national labs performing 74 projects. The UDW Program utilizes a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in advisory roles.

Projects include under water 3D laser imaging carried by ROV’s, HIPPS sensors in the UDW, remote sensing boring well-bore cement, climate change [really] and hurricane prediction, monitoring loop currents with sea gliders and satellites, threat assessment in human factors, riser integrity management, BOP actuation sensors, pre-riser-post BOP sensors and retractable rams, subsea produced water sensor, CFD to prevent topsides explosions, and tracking micro emitters “In-Frac”.

Onshore Resources Program; Charged to study economically viable technologies to allow environmentally acceptable development of unconventional oil and gas resources in Shales or Tight Sands and even Coalbed Methane.

Projects study the New Albany shale-data base management of 80 years of data, Marcellus remote sensing to optimize frac recovery, mud gas logging of producers, yes-Micro seismic for induced seismicity, combo imaging for unconventional evaluation, water disposal, and methane emissions.
