To the oil and gas industry, intelligent wells have generally implied the use
of downhole control through surveillance sensors and actuation of flow
control devices in effectively real-time. The principal reason for the application
of intelligent well technologies has been the expected need for future intervention
where both the technical and economic limitations of a conventional completion
are exceeded. Reducing the need for future interventions to shut off or reduce
unwanted flow, establish production from an additional zone or permanently
isolate a depleted zone have been major drivers for intelligent technologies.
As a result, the flow control devices most commonly used have been designs
with only open or closed positions. As reliability has increased the additional
benefits for reservoir management have been recognized. The use of flow
control devices which provide choking capabilities enable commingled
production or controlled injection for multiple zones as reservoir management
conditions change.

The rationale for the use of intelligent technologies continues to grow concurrently
with the need to address more complex requirements. This presentation of case
histories and reliability documentation will demonstrate the evolution of the
technology. Also, technical developments that will be required for more
demanding future applications will be examined.
