Westside - Stabilizing Wellbores in Unconsolidated, Clay-Laden Reservoirs

With the recent emphasis on recovering by-passed hydrocarbon reserves and extending field production, through-tubing sand control techniques present an economically attractive completion option. One such technique involves the chemical consolidation of the formation minerals. Formation consolidation systems have been developed that address many of the concerns with conventional resin systems. One of these systems incorporates a low viscosity solvent / resin mixture with unique properties such that the resin is deposited as a thin film on the formation mineral surfaces. Some of the benefits of such a system include:

  • operational simplicity
  • uniform placement
  • applicable for wide range of reservoir properties
  • no postflush stage required to initiate curing
  • excellent regained permeabilities
  • significant increases in formation strength.

Laboratory testing with simulated and actual cores will be presented to show regained perms, unconfined compressive strengths, and triaxial test results at various confining stresses. SEM images will be used to illustrate the coating behavior on formation minerals.

Field applications will be presented to demonstrate formation consolidation with minimal fines production and mechanical strength outside of the casing for screenless frac pack applications.
