Managed Pressure Drilling – Mitigation Strategy for Lost Circulation
Curing down hole losses can be a very daunting task during drilling operation. If losses are not controlled at earlier stage, it can lead to complete loss of circulation. Lost circulation during drilling can pose a significant economic and safety risk. Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) technology has been gaining industry wide acceptance as a mitigation tool for such challenging issues. Equipment such as high precision pressure sensors, accurate flow metering and fully automated chokes are being utilized for accurate ECD management during MPD operations. Early Kick & Loss detection capability of MPD system can help to identify and hence mitigate any Kick / loss event and hence make ECD management safer task. Field results describing application of MPD technology to mitigate down hole problems will be discussed.
