PF&C: World's First Buoyant Tower

The world’s first buoyant tower was installed offshore Peru September, 2012 on BPZ Energy’s Corvina field. The buoyant tower is HortonGMC’s proprietary design that is a fusion of proven technology from deepwater cell spars and compliant towers resulting in a bottom-founded structure suitable for water depths up to 300 meters.  Because of the tower’s unique characteristics, it can be easily and quickly installed without the need for an expensive heavy crane vessel.

This presentation will run through the development of the buoyant tower concept and the reasons why it was chosen by BPZ for their Peruvian development.  Because of the interest shown by the industry in this exciting new sub-structure, the basic design is being expanded to encompass new variants with oil storage and variable depth capability — these will be described together with their potential application in the field.
