Drilling: Hydrostatic Packers - The Most Useful Practice You’ve Never Used

HydrostaticPackers are not a mechanical tool, but an operational practice.  They consist of a column of light fluid, the length and density of which is engineered to allow precise control of the placement of pills, cement, and other fluids in wells that will not stand full due to low integrity.  The primary cause of failure in the treatment of lost returns is overdisplacement and the use of hydrostatic packers has resulted in a very high success rate in even the most severe lost returns events.  They have been used in operations for 17 years and have greatly affected well control practices, vugular loss practices, and cementing success in low integrity.  These practices were built on some unique insights related to pressure behaviors during loss events, and field
application requires operations training and engineering oversight.
