Drilling: Technical Forum Series - Turning Real Time Data in Decisions

Please join us on the afternoon of Dec 14, 2011 at the Westlake Club to explore how four operators are using real-time information to drive effective decision making and positive performance improvement for their drilling operations.

Speakers:  Duncan Blue, Baker Hughes; Kelly Talkington, ConocoPhillips; Mark Reynolds, Southwestern Energy; and Dave Carpenter, Shell Upstream Americas

Mark Reynolds – Southwestern Energy
From their real-time center located in Conway, Arkansas, Southwestern Energy provides 24/7 monitoring for 15 rigs that are operating in the Fayetteville Shalle.  Since implementing the real-time center, Southwestern has been able to reduce the average drilling days per well to 7, allowing each rig to drill up to 35 wells per year.

Dave Carpenter, Magnolia Asset, Shell Upstream Americas
Shell’s operation in the Haynesville Shale region, known as the Magnolia Asset, has become a hot bed of automation test /implementation activity for the company. In their pursuit for faster, cheaper wells, the Magnolia drilling team volunteered to be a test bed for Shell’s efforts to develop real time drilling tools.  Most recently, the team successfully deployed remote directional, MWD and geosteering capabilities to several rigs.   The capability allows them to remove personnel from the rig site and concentrate expertise in remote centers.  However, the real payoff has been a dramatic improvement in the speed and accuracy needed to make geosteering decisions with the office team.  As drilling pace improves in the lateral, cycle time for geosteering decisions becomes a critical success factor.
