Using the float-over technique in order to install offshore topsides has been used for many years. Lately there has been an increase in the number of field developments in which this technique is targeted during FEED. This is due to the fact that float-over operations have many benefits compared to conventional lifting operations and that the weight of the topsides can be allowed to exceed the lift capacities of the current floating offshore cranes available in the market. This presentation will show the challenges we face in the current use of float-over installations and the outsize challenges we will face in the future due to the increased weight of the topsides as well as the expansion of use of the technique to areas with harsh environmental conditions.
