Permian Basin: Residual Oil Zone Symposium

Permian Basin Study Group of SPE Gulf Coast Section Presents

Residual Oil Zone Symposium

Residual Oil Zones (ROZ’s) are formations that contain oil at saturations too low to be produced by primary production or waterflood. Some projects have already recovered significant new reserves, and the remaining potential for additional floods is great both underneath existing CO2 floods and even on previously unproductive acreage.

Speakers:

Dr. Bob Trentham, Center for Energy and Economic Diversification, The University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
Abstract:This presentation is a geological overview of ROZ’s and the long term future of the Permian Basin (and elsewhere). ROZ’s are only producible with tertiary recovery methods (both CO2 and chemical) and it is estimated that there are >10 Billion barrels of recoverable reserves in the ROZ’s in the upper Guadalupian carbonate reservoirs in the Permian Basin alone. There are additional ROZ’s in other producing intervals in the basin which await documentation and substantial ROZ’s are believed to also exist in other basins in the U. S.

Matt Honarpour, Senior Reservoir Engineering Advisor at Hess
Abstract:Reliable rock and fluid characterizations are critical to evaluate the CO2 flood potential and an optimum design of CO2 flood strategy. This presentation shows significant improvement in data quality and reduction in rock and fluid data uncertainty for miscible CO2 flood by adopting best practice methodologies for characterization of rock and fluid properties.

Dane Cantwell,Vice President of Development, Legado Resources, LLC.
Abstract: This talk is aroundGoldsmith Landreth San Andres Unit. It is an update of Legado’s progress on the Main Pay / ROZ co-development project in Ector County, Texas.

Steve Pennell, Reservoir Engineer on the SACROC CO2 Flood Project for Kinder Morgan.
Abstract:The residual oil zone (ROZ) underlying the Main Pay (MP) oil column is being evaluated for CO2 flooding at the SACROC Unit in Scurry County, Texas.  Until 2011, SACROC CO2 injection operations have been focused on the MP, which extends down to a tilted producing oil/water contact (POWC). Plans are to isolate the ROZ in four patterns and test CO2 flooding the ROZ only.

Michael F. Stell, Managing Senior Vice President at Ryder Scott Company L.P.
Abstract: This presentation is an auditor's view of booking reserves In CO2 EOR Projects and the ROZ.
