During the early 1990’s the Automation Industry was challenged with a “Paradigm Shift” in establishing and adopting non-proprietary industry standards with the objective of delivering an automation architecture to support open protocols, plug and play integration of components and interoperability between manufacturer products. A similar challenge faces the drilling industry in its evolution toward standardization and data sharing to help support efforts to automate the drilling process. This presentation provides an overview of the challenges faced by the Automation Industry highlighting similarities between the two industries, the adoption of new business models and relevant lessons learned.

Coiled tubing drilling rigs offer advantages over conventional rigs when it comes to ease of mobility, safety, environmentally friendly footprint, and drilling times. In this presentation, Tyson will discuss how Xtreme’s Coil Over Top Drive hybrid drilling rigs have consistently delivered value in the DJ basin - a field that has experienced several cycles of expansion and revitalization due to new play discoveries and innovative technologies which continue to expand its longevity.

In this presentation, Ray will discuss Drillmec’s objectives and philosophy for developing its hydraulic automated rigs and how they have improved drilling performance.  This includes design features that drive down management and operating costs, increase safety parameters on the drillfloor and during mobilization and demobilization, along with reducing environmental impact especially around urban areas.

Chris will discuss how Schlumberger IPM successfully applied Factory Drilling concepts to a project in Mexico and maximized utilization of project resources to increase well construction efficiency.

10:55 am – 11:45 am Talks on real-time operations and information management

Dominic Kung, Remote Products Manager, Pason Systems

While the need for instrumentation has not diminished on the rig site, office users are increasingly interested in real time viewing of various rig parameters, especially with regard to efficiency metrics. In the past the focus on monitoring has been rig-centric, but with the introduction of better communication tools, the focus is shifting towards an office-centric view with more decisions being made in the office than on location. We will give a quick overview of the rig centric focus and current workflows, and show how it expands to an office centric focus.  This office focus may take the form of individuals or the use of real time centers using consolidated data. In this presentation, Dominic will discuss how Pason is working to adapt and create technology to enable operators, contractors and service companies to be able to stay competitive in the evolving market.

Real time operations require continuous information from every aspect of an activity.  Depending on the complexity of the operation this may include single-source data from a single point of acquisition, but more likely includes a variety of information from a mixture of data acquisition points and an assortment of technologies. A key ingredient in supporting real time operations are the information management processes needed to ensure that the right information is available for the right end-users.  In this presentation, David will discuss current trends around information management, data transfer and data consumption that enable the use of real time information to manage and intervene in operations.
