Course Description

This course is designed as an introduction to inorganic scaling. It will include an overview of the different types of inorganic oilfield scales encountered under production conditions with various methods used for control. Field examples from different geographical locations will be included throughout the course to illustrate the importance of an effective scale management strategy.

Learning Objectives

• Basic mechanisms involved in scale formation, prediction, and inhibition and treatment options such as de-sulphation, scale removal, and dissolution
• Detailed discussions on the treatment and prevention of conventional carbonate and sulphate scales in addition to the more unusual or exotic scales such as the iron, lead, and zinc sulphides 
• Scaling issues associated with the production of heavy, high TAN crudes and the potential formation of calcium naphthenate scales with different treatment methodologies used for their mitigation
• Detailed review of scale management in both conventional and complex production scenarios including deepwater, subsea, and HP/HT production environments
• The influence of initial field design and varying production conditions on the successful control of inorganic scales 
• The use of various modelling tools including scale prediction software, reservoir simulators, and near well-bore treatment models with benefits and limitations for assessing the severity and location of a scaling problem
• The technical, economic, and risk-based analysis process used by several operators for estimating total field scale management costs for new field developments 
• The economic impact of various treatment and engineering options throughout a field's productive life using field examples from different geographical locations
• Details of the squeeze process and the potential for associated formation damage aspects
• Methods involved in the retention of both conventional (aqueous based) and other (non-aqueous based) scale inhibitor treatments

Who Should Attend

The course is intended for new or practicing production engineers and production chemists involved in scale control and mitigation in oilfield operations. No formal training is required other than practical interest in oilfield scale.
