Understanding the Geology of Gas Shales:
Key to Field Development and Completion Strategy
The recent expansion of gas shale plays in North America and abroad has made everyone more aware of the complexity of these plays and the often major differences between them. A key to understanding and predicting the behavior of these rocks as reservoirs is a detailed analysis of the geologic facies of these formations. These formations not only differ from one another, but are also internally heterogeneous both vertically and arealy. A thorough study of the depositional environments and facies distribution within these shales can enable an asset team to identify the intervals that are best suited for drilling, as well as to predict their distribution within a given basin. A comprehensive understanding of the successful shale plays that are active today can also enable more effective predictions as to where to explore globally for other similarly productive reservoirs.
