PF&C: Subsea HIPPS: Still a Viable Option for GoM?

In the aftermath of the environmental disaster from the uncontrolled subsea blowout in the GoM, the safety and integrity of deepwater development is currently under scrutiny. In light of this uncertainty, selecting an intrinsically safe approach of designing subsea equipment to the full wellhead shut-in pressure appeals to the designer. However, discovery of hydrocarbon resources in deepwater and tertiary reservoirs opens up a dilemma of designing subsea system for shut-in pressure greater than 15,000 psi. The presentation discusses the challenges of designing subsea HIPPS and comprehensive implementation of new technology without compromising safety and integrity.  Design of deepest and highest pressure rating HIPPS requires clear definition of safety and reliability goals and meticulous attention to the details on qualification and lifecycle reliability assurance.
