C&P: Shell Mars TLP Waterflood Project - Injector Performance

This presentation summarizes the injector performance and completion design issues for the 3 injectors in the Mars TLP, in the deepwater of the Gulf of Mexico. These injectors are 2 cased hole fracpacks and 1 smart well with an open hole gravel pack in the lower zone and a cased-perforated ESS (expanded sand screen) in the upper zone. Sand control with these completions has not been maintained with fracture rate injection. Formation material infill has been observed inside the screen for all 3 injectors. The loss of sand control is limiting the vertical conformance on interval with multiple lobe of completion. Smart type injectors have very low tolerance for sand infill on the upper completion before injectivity is affected. Moreover, remedial options to remove sand infill are limited for this upper completion. Mechanical integrity of the wellbore has been compromised on 2 of the injectors, where near wellbore strain changes due to on-off injection pressure cycling may have an impact.
